Growing Society Garlic
Summer bulb. Evergreen. Stands to 30 in. (75 cm) tall. Swordlike, midlength, thin, gray green leaves.
Popular cultivars include Tulbaghia violacea ‘Silver Lace’, ‘Tricolor’, and ‘Variegata’, with colorful leaf variegations.

Flowers
Late spring–summer. Lavender, white. Multiple flared, tube-shaped, star-flared, fragrant flowers, 3/4–1‑ in. (19–25‑mm) long, in clusters atop tall, narrow stems.

U.S.D.A. Plant Hardiness Zones 8–11; ground hardy, zones 9–11.
Soil Type and Fertility
Moist to damp, well-drained, sandy loam. Fertility: Average. 6.5–7.5 pH.
Where and How to Plant
Spring in full sun. Space 12–18 in. (30–45 cm) apart, 2 in. (50 mm) deep.
Proper Care
Easy. Keep moist spring–autumn. Allow soil to dry between waterings. Drought tolerant when established. Fertilize during growth; dilute fertilizer to half the recommended rate. Mulch. Protect from frost, zones 8–9. Propagate by division, offsets, seed. Divide only when crowded.
Lifting and Storing
Dark, 50–60°F (10–16°C), in net bag or open basket of dry peat moss.
About This Species
Good choice for accents, beds, borders, containers, edgings in meadow gardens and landscapes. Good for cutting. Deer, rodent resistant.
