Seasons of Deciduous Trees and Shrubs
We value deciduous trees and shrubs for giving us shade in summer and for their gorgeous foliage color displays during autumn. Deciduous broadleaf species and conifers shed their leaves or needles, becoming dormant.
They leaf out again each spring, heralding longer days and the return of warm weather. These trees and shrubs retain their leafy growth throughout summer until autumn. Then they put on their seasonal show of brilliant color, turning shades of amber, orange, red, purple, or yellow.
During winter, many deciduous trees and shrubs reveal their interesting structural forms and bring muted elegance to somber landscapes. Contorted filbert, Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’, is one such plant. Its curiously twisted, corkscrew-like branches are a conversation piece in any garden.

About Deciduous Trees and Shrubs
When you choose deciduous trees, remember that the degree of shade they provide varies considerably from species to species, depending on their canopy’s density.
Tulip and linden are species known for their shade benefits, a positive feature if you live in a hot and sunny climate.
Those that prefer dappled shade find dogwood, catalpas and honey locusts good choices.
As a conversation piece, plant a deciduous conifer such as bald cypress or dawn redwood. They’re remarkable for losing all of their needle-like foliage in the autumn, standing bare through the winter, and leafing out again in spring.
Temperature, light, and water supply all influence the degree and duration of autumn foliage color. Deciduous trees perform differently, depending on your climate.
Ask your local university extension agent or inquire at a nursery or garden center to find trees and shrubs that produce the best color in your area. Select plants that exhibit the colors you seek. As an example ‘October Glory’ red maple has rich reddish purple leaves in autumn, while ‘Red Sunset’ maple has bright orange to red foliage.
Variety in Deciduous Trees
Part of the glory of deciduous plants is their ever-changing appearance. They flower, bear fruit, change color in autumn, and keep their charm even when they go bare in winter.
