Growing Deutzia
About 40 species of medium- to slow-growing, mounded or arching, usually deciduous shrubs, 6–9 ft. (1.8–2.7 m) tall, with smooth, green, lance-shaped, pointed, finely toothed leaves, 2–5 in. (50–125 mm) long.
Some species have attractive, reddish brown bark. Dwarf species available.

Flowers and Seeds
Small, star-shaped, pink, purple, white, simple flowers in late spring, to 1 in. (25 mm) wide, in arching clusters, form many small seeds.
Best Climates
U.S.D.A. Plant Hardiness Zones 4–9, depending on species. Most species ground hardy, zones 6–9.
Soil Type and Fertility
Moist, well-drained soil. Fertility: Average. 6.0–7.5 pH.
Where and How to Plant
Full sun to partial shade. Space 5–7 ft. (1.5–2.2 m) apart.
Proper Care
Easy. Keep moist. Fertilize quarterly spring–autumn. Prune after bloom. Protect from frost. Propagate by cuttings, division, layering, seed.
About This Species
