Growing Vanhoutte Spirea
A single hybrid cultivar of fast-growing, arching, dense, deciduous shrub, to 6 ft. (1.8 m) tall, with red-tinged turning to blue green, oval, slightly lobed, veined leaves, to 1‑1/2‑in. (38‑mm) long, turning purple, red in autumn.
Many other Spiraea species and cultivars are available, some requiring different care and pruning than does Spiraea X vanhouttei.

Tiny, fragrant, white flowers in spring form showy, ball-shaped clusters, to 4 in. (10 cm) wide, along arched branches, with inconspicuous seed follicles in summer.

Easy. Keep moist. Fertilize semi-annually spring and autumn. Prune after bloom, removing wood that has flowered. Propagate by cuttings, layering, seed.
About This Species
Good choice for accents, backgrounds, fencelines, hedges, walls in cottage, small-space, woodland gardens. Best in dry climates. Fireblight, powdery mildew susceptible.
