Growing Indian Hawthorne
Many cultivars of slow-growing, rounded, dense, broadleaf evergreen shrubs, 4–6 ft. (1–3 m) tall and wide. Opposite or alternate, shiny, bronze becoming deep green, oval and pointed leaves, 1-1/2–3–in. (38–76-mm) long. Native to East Asia, Korea, and Japan.
Commonly cultivated hybrids and species include pink-flowered Rhaphiolepis X delacouri, white-flowered R. indica, and their hybrids, both with the common name Indian Hawthorne, and R. umbellata, or Yeddo Hawthorne, distinguished by its rounded, leathery, dark-green leaves and larger white flowers.

Flowers and Fruit
Showy, fragrant, cupped and star-shaped, cream, pink, white flowers with rounded petals, to 1/2-in. (13-mm) wide, in ball-shaped or domed clusters, from midwinter to spring, form deep-blue, round, berrylike fruit, to 1/4-in. (6-mm) wide, in summer to early autumn.

Soil Type and Fertility
Damp to nearly dry, well-drained, high-organic soil. Fertility: Rich–average. 6.0–7.5 pH.
Where and How to Plant
Full sun or filtered shade in autumn or early spring. Space 4–6 ft. (1.2–1.8 m) apart.
Proper Care
Easy. Keep evenly moist until established; drought tolerant thereafter. Fertilize quarterly. Pinch, prune, or shear to shape and maintain form and size. Protect during hard freezes.
Suffers leaf scorch in desert and hot climates, requiring shade. Propagate by cuttings, grafting, layering, seed.
