Early Care of Bulbs After Planting
Starting Bulbs Right
Bulbs require remarkably little post-planting care to keep them healthy and protect them from harsh weather, pests, or diseases.
Because bulbs spend much of their life cycle dormant they seldom fail, even in conditions that challenge other flowering plants
Bulbs tolerate soil conditions, drought and both low and high temperatures. The regular care for established bulbs is nearly foolproof and simple [see: Caring for Flowers].
It’s only during the post-planting period, while the bulbs are dormant but before they have developed roots, that special care may be helpful to get them started right.
Key Care Needs of New Bulbs
Post-planting care for normal bulbs is different than for those treated to bloom at a specific time, or forced. They are treated differently even when you plant both the same way.
Care needs also change if bulbs are planted in containers instead of in your yard, and by their season of bloom.
In this section, you’ll find how to provide care after planting to forced bulbs and landscape or container bulbs, including:
-
- Pre-bloom care of forced bulbs [see: Caring for Forced Bulbs]
- Mulching landscape bulbs [see: Mulching Landscape Bulb Plantings]
- Watering and feeding bulbs [see: Post-Planting Bulb Care]
