Growing Windflower
Spring rhizome or tuberous root. Deciduous. About 120 species. Stands 2–36 in. (50–900 mm) tall. Feathery, deeply toothed, small green leaves.
Commonly cultivated species and close relatives include Balkan anemone, Anemonoides blanda; crown anemone, Anemone coronaria; scarlet anemone, Anemone X fulgens; Japanese anemone, Anemone X hybrida; wood anemone, Anemone nemorosa; and snowdrop anemone, Anemone sylvestris.

Flowers
Late winter–spring. Blue, pink, purple, red, white. Solitary daisy- or poppylike flowers, to 3 in. (75 mm) wide, with distinct centers and fleshy stems.

Soil Type and Fertility
Moist to damp, well-drained humus. Fertility: Rich. 6.0–7.5 pH, depending on species.
Where and How to Plant
Autumn in full sun to partial shade, zones 8–10; spring, zones 3–7. Space 4–12 in. (10–30 cm) apart, 1–2 in. (25–50 mm) deep.
Proper Care
Easy. Keep moist autumn–spring, dry in summer. Fertilize monthly during growth. Mulch, zones 3–6. Propagate by division, seed.
Lifting and Storing
Rhizomes: dark, 40–50°F (4–10°C), in porous container of dampened peat moss; tuberous roots: dark, 50–70°F (10–21°C), in open basket of dry peat moss.
About This Species
Good choice for beds, containers, edgings, mixed plantings in meadow, natural, woodland gardens. Good for cutting. Deer, rodent susceptible.
