Growing Ginger Lily
Nearly 50 species of arching or erect, upright, rhizomatous, semi-evergreen, tropical perennial herbs, 3–7 ft. (90–215 cm) tall and wide. Opposite, shiny, deep green, yellow green, oval, pointed, veined leaves, to 2 ft. (60 cm) long.
Commonly cultivated species include butterfly lily, Hedychium coronarium; red ginger lily, Hedychium coccineum; and yellow ginger, Hedychium flavescens.

Planting and Care Guide
Blooms
Very showy, pink, red, white, yellow, tubular, very fragrant flowers, 2–3 in. (50–75 mm) long, with leafy basal bracts, in tall, spiking clusters, to 1 ft. (30 cm) high, in summer–autumn.
Best Climates
Semi-hardy. Zones 8–11. Best in tropical climates.
Soil Type and Fertility
Wet, well-drained humus or, in water features, shoreline, marginal sites. Fertility: Rich. 6.0–7.0 pH.
Where and How to Plant
Spring in full sun, 4–6 ft. (120–180 cm) apart, or submerged to 5 in. (13 cm).
Proper Care
Moderate. Keep evenly moist; mist foliage. Fertilize monthly during active growth. Mulch. Propagate by division.
About This Plant
Good choice for accents, borders, containers, fencelines in seaside, shade, tropical gardens and water feature shorelines and margins. Good for cutting, Hawaiian and Polynesian leis. Pest and disease resistant.
